The Yeezus-era interview tour continues, as yesterday Kanye West also stopped by the Hot 97 offices to talk about HIP-HOP. No more fashion talk, please. In this Juan Epstein episode, Kanye is asked who exactly influenced his early music and production and who he prefers when it comes hip-hop’s Golden Age producers. West also shares about how he first received his first production equipment via his crackhead stepbrother (who knew?) and explains how his drum patterns were his “achilles heel” prior to the release of Yeezus, of which he calls “an exercise on drums and mixes”.
Lastly, West talks about meeting his idol Michael Jackson at music executive Lyor Cohen‘s house. Apparently, Jackson influenced Ye to sing and create the basis for the melancholy 808’s & Heartbreak. Watch the ten-minute trailer of their episode above.
