The Summer Olympics are heading back to Asia after it was confirmed yesterday that Tokyo, Japan will be hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics. Tokyo edged out Istanbul in the final round to take the bid which bring the Summer Games back to the city for the second time in history. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) are hopeful that awarding Tokyo as the host city will uplift the devastation that has recently plagued the country after the country’s recent economic and political decline coupled with the tsunamis and earthquakes of recent years. About 100,000 people are still unable to go home because of the nuclear disaster that struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in 2011. Government officials say that the Summer Games could possibly help Japan’s economy with an economic boost of around $30 billion.
Next year’s Summer Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
